DIY Treasure Box - 3D Mechanical Model
If you are looking for a different gift for a teen or tween that requires a little perseverance and delayed gratification (for a very rewarding end) then this innovative offering from ROKR is just the thing.
The treasure box arrives flat packed in a box, with smooth, easy to press out, laser-cut wooden pieces and with all the tools you need included. No batteries or glue is needed, pieces slot together. The detailed assembly instructions break the construction down into clearly defined stages.
Once finished, the resulting box is a beautifully carved, elegant storage container. Somewhere for keeping jewellery safe, or maybe a private note. To unlock a code needs to be input, and then a key to open. The passcode can be selected from 810 sets listed in the manual, but one set cannot be changed.
The manufacturer estimates that it will take 3 - 4 hours to assembly. We would advise having an adult on hand to help supervise assembly. Sometimes a stronger pair of fingers are needed, or simply some advice on the best way to assemble.
The box is made of natural plywood without any added toxins, both safe and eco-friendly.
A real engineering treat and a fun way to see physics in action.
So although this is a project that needs careful time and patience, Treasure Box makes a great gift, probably for that very reason. There is a huge sense of achievement when the whole piece is finished and the box can be opened and closed.
This particular model is given a 4 out of 5 difficultly rating. Other models available.
