Hogwarts Battle - A Cooperative Deck Building Game
If you are looking for a way to thrill the Harry Potter fans in your life, you may have just found it. This game is the real deal. It is clearly a labour of love and it shows, from the box design (a witch or wizard's trunk) right through to the detail and accuracy found on the cards.
The premise of the game is simple. Evil forces threaten to overrun Hogwarts Castle, and it is up to the players (four students) to defeat the villains and strengthen defences. Choose your hero (Harry, Ron, Hermione or Neville) and play that student's personal deck of cards (resources for each character are tailored, e.g. Hermione has Crookshanks the cat as an ally and a time-turner, whilst Harry has Hedwig the owl and the invisibility cloak). It is these touches that will delight the die hard HP fans, and they run consistently throughout the whole game.
As the game progresses (there are seven rounds or successive adventures) the students get older (reflected in the card images which are stills from the films) and the villains harder to defeat. The players must combine their skills and work co-cooperatively to stand a chance to be victorious (I love watching my children play this game together, for this very reason. It makes a nice change from them competing against each other).
Heroes can become more powerful by adding cards to their deck such as iconic characters, spells, and magical items. Other cards restore health or fight villains to stop them gaining power. The villains of course can attack and weaken the heroes with their Dark Arts, which grow increasingly powerful as the game continues.
We've found that this is a game that can be played in one afternoon (if you have the time) but due to the 7 different adventures within the game it can also be played in shorter bursts.
Please note, that this game may contain some spoilers for readers who have not yet read the Harry Potter books or films (mostly regarding who the villains are).
For 2 - 4 players. Recommended by manufacturer for children aged 11 years + (we've found that some HP loving 9 and 10 years olds will enjoy this too, especially if they are used to deck building games).
Hogwarts Battle was a Mensa Select Winner 2017.
